The Climate Leadership Certificate provides the training and experience needed for students to apply a variety of skills to critical work in climate action and justice, as well as other vital areas of sustainability, including social justice, economic vitality, and well-being. Throughout the one-and-a-half year program, students engage in curriculum targeted at sustainability literacy, planning, and leadership, while also participating in hands-on practicum work with a variety of sustainability organizations in Whatcom County and the Methow Valley.

My experience as a first-gen Mexican American and college student has motivated me to continue my education so that I can be an advocate for underrepresented communities like my own. My dream climate-related job would tie in representation and advocacy of BIPOC environmental justice issues, policy, and sustainability. I envision looking like an environmental justice coordinator where I am able to be an advocate and representative for underrepresented communities in decision-making spaces. Additionally, I’d like to be able to interact and learn from people of varying degrees of lived experiences.

There are so many aspects to the Climate Leadership Certificate program that I am looking forward to! I am eager to start work over the summer and apply the skills I have gained over the years while also learning a lot through a hands-on approach. I am looking forward to working with a group of people who care about the environment and social change and am excited to see how I can use what I will learn through this program in my career.
