WWU Athletics’ Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Programming

Amount Awarded: $70,125.00

Academic Year: 2023-2024

Implementation: Active, Fall 2023 – Spring 2025

The purpose of this project is to establish long-term programming related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) within the WWU Athletics Department. The department did not previously have an established set of standards, goals, or priorities related to programming for student-athletes and athletics’ staff at the university. This initiative lays the groundwork and set standards for the department moving forward, embedding a culture of educating student-athletes to see themselves as more than just athletes, but as people with a diverse range of goals, desires, interests, and needs.

This grant provides consistent funding to put on monthly/quarterly events for WWU student-athletes and staff. Events include a Cultural Heritage lecture series, Welcome Week Resource Fair, and special interest celebrations at games, such as Pride Night and Latine Heritage Night. The grant also supported the creation of a Student-Athlete Social Justice Committee, which has the autonomy to create their own programming related to social justice within athletics.
