Stephanie Land’s Campus Visit

Stephanie Land’s Campus Visit

Amount Awarded: $14,000.00

Academic Year: 2023-2024

Implementation: Active, Fall 2024

This event will bring author Stephanie Land to campus as part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in November 2024 to make a bold statement to the WWU campus community that we (the university) care about the experiences of students and we want to do better in meeting their needs. Land’s first book, Maid, chronicles her experiences of domestic violence, single motherhood, and navigating poverty in Skagit county and other areas of Washington. Her second book, Class, recounts her experiences of pursuing higher education as a single mom navigating community and campus resources and the constant struggle to have her basic needs met. Land’s personal story shines a light on basic needs insecurities in a raw and honest way.

By bringing this well-known author to campus, the team hopes to bring more awareness to basic needs insecurities on campus and in the community. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which is coordinated by the staff and students of the Basic Needs Hub, is a week full of events and activities designed to bring awareness to these insecurities, as well as to provide resources for folks navigating challenges. Multiple events will be coupled with Land’s visit, including a student forum, staff/faculty meet and greet, and an evening keynote speech.
