About

Western Washington University’s Re-Gown It Program was created by a group of students and first implemented last year to divert caps, gowns and stoles from ending up in landfills after only one-times use while allowing graduates to borrow, rather than buy, graduation regalia. This program is run through donations, meaning that the more donations we receive, less students must buy expensive caps and gowns for commencement in the coming quarters.

If you are interested in donating your cap, gown or stole after graduation, you will be able to find a donation station in the Viking Union 6th floor Information Desk during summer break. We are accepting borrowed cap and gown returns, as well as new donations.

The Re-Gown it Program is officially out of graduation regalia to be used at the Spring 2026 graduation ceremonies.

Frequently Asked Questions

After walking at graduation, there will be various return stations outside of the Carver Gymnasium, or you can return or donate any graduation materials to the VU Info Desk on the 6th floor to be recirculated at future commencements.

Please do NOT wash your cap, gown, or stole. Since these materials are created for a one-times use, they do not do well in the wash. The Sustainability Engagement Institute steams every gown to keep them fresh. Just wear it and return it!

We accept all regalia used at commencement.

This includes:

Master's and Bachelor’s caps, gowns, tassels, and stoles.

*Tassels are only accepted after Spring commencement.

If you are graduating in a Fall 2026 commencement, check back here in early Fall 2026 for updates on how you can receive graduation regalia.

Please do! We accept old and new graduation regalia. The more we receive, the more we can distribute to our wonderful graduates!
