Amount Awarded: $527.53
Academic Year: 2023-2024
Implementation: Spring 2024
Students from the Business & Sustainability program put together an event during the Earth Day fair in spring 2024. The goal was to educate students in the practices of both upcycling and gardening. Through a hands-on workshop, students were guided through the process of creating their own upcycled planters and mini greenhouses to take home at no cost.
The team wanted to show students how easy it is to grow your own herbs and vegetables at home, with materials that can be found anywhere, and even if space is limited. They had collected recyclable containers such as cardboard paper towel holders and plastic milk jugs, prepping them to hold soil. Seed and vegetable starts were obtained from a local nursery. During the Earth Day fair, students were able to choose which herbs/vegetables they wanted to plant and then take them home to continue growing. The project team offered resources, as well as an online discussion board, to support students in their growing of veggies.
Testimonials:
“We felt like our project made a real impact on the student body. We got to meet so many people who were interested in growing their own food and set them up with a great way to start. This experience helped us learn just how important food security is, particularly among students. We were so grateful for this opportunity and are looking forward to seeing how students continue to use what they’ve learned!” - grant team
