2026 Events

Earth Week 2026 will take place from Monday April 20th through Friday April 24th with Earth Day falling on Wednesday April 22nd. There will be a variety of events and celebrations on or around Western Washington University! All students are welcome and are encouraged to attend!

Earth Week events not hosted by the Sustainability Engagement Institute are subject to change by the host groups. To learn more about individual events, please contact the host groups directly!

Earth Week Fair

Description: Kick off Earth Week with our annual Earth Week Fair. Pick up some swag, play games, and learn about some of the groups pushing for sustainability in our community!

Carbon Grand Challenge

 

Description: Teams of WWU students will compete on April 22 for the best decarbonization proposal to a panel of judges (Bellingham civic leaders, industry experts, and business leaders). Cash prizes for first- and second-place teams and free food!

Skagit Land Trust Earth Day Work Party

 

Description: Celebrate Earth Day with Skagit Land Trust at Utopia Conservation Area! Volunteers and staff will work together to remove invasive species in previous years plantings and along walking paths. Please stay after for a walk to the Wild & Scenic Skagit River!

Campus Sustainability Walking Tour

 

Description: Looking for new WWU factoids to keep in your back pocket? Learn about ways our campus is saying "We see you and we hear you" to Mother [Nature] from the grounds crew to student-led initiatives. Be prepared for a ~1-mile walk through campus, rain or shine! This tour will be fully physically accessible.

On Campus Restoration Work Party

 

Description: Removing invasive plants and enhancing a forest island on WWU's south campus. Expect to do hands-on work, getting slightly dirty. Tools, gloves, instruction, and snacks will be provided. This is a great place to meet new people who care about sustaining our planet for future generations.

Description: As a part of University Residences Go for the Green campaign, Zero Waste Western, Waste Operations and the Sustainability Engagement Institute invite you to a thrift swap! Bring 1 or 2 items such clothes, books or plants (please nothing larger) to swap or just stop by and peruse what others have brought!

Fourth Annual SRE Forest Bath

Host: Students for Renewable Energy 

Date: Thursday 4/23 

Time/Location: 4:30 – 6:30pm Meet in Red Square 

Description: Students for Renewable Energy Club is hosting our Fourth Annual Earth Day Forest Bath! Join us on a relaxing walk in the Sehome Arboretum with a forest meditation and time for reflection. Forest baths are a proven method for stress reduction and is a great way to celebrate Earth Week. Optionally, feel welcome to bring a blanket, jacket, or anything else that will make this experience more comfortable for you. Please expect to go on a short uphill walk up to the Watchtower in the Arboretum. Wear trail appropriate shoes. This event will happen rain or shine!

Learning from the Land

Host: Community Service Center 

Date: Thursday 4/23 

Time/location: 3-5pm VU 735 

Description: Community Service Center's event, Learning from the Land. It contains a service project by Jennifer of the Lummi Nation to make teabags out of local plants for the nation's elders. It will also include personal self-care product creation out of essential oils to promote Native American culture and sustainability in consumption.

Description: Celebrate Earth Day with the Salish Sea Club by learning from the Land through the connection between plants, trees, and people.

Women of Carbon Film Screening

Title: Women of Carbon Film Screening  

Host: Club for Urban Environmental Sustainability, Students for Climate Action, and Cascadia Women’s International Film Festival 

Date: Wednesday 4/22 

Time/Location: 5:30– 7:00 pm AW204 

Description: Come watch the 2025 documentary, Women of Carbon, in collaboration with CUES (Club for Urban Environmental Sustainability), SCA (Students for Climate Action), and Cascadia Women's International Film Festival! This event is meant to honor the contributions and innovations of women in male-dominated industries, especially in the sustainability field. The documentary not only highlights victories but also explores the painful journeys that many influential women of science face in their pursuits. As mentioned by the filmmaker and producer, Basia Myszynski, "I believe without gender equity, there will be no climate justice." Join us afterwards for a Q&A with Cristy, resource manager of the Yakima Nation and Rena Simon the principal of ZGF Architecture from the film to dive into details about their experiences.
